Treatment Pathway

Treatment Pathway

We want to let you know what to expect at your first visit. After your first or second assessment, we will make a treatment plan together. We need to decide on the best approach for you and your life.

Like most things in life, you will get the most out of your treatment if you are committed to your plan and making necessary changes.

Your First Appointment

At your first appointment, we will have a long chat about your symptoms, medical history and any concerns you have. It is important that you feel comfortable and open to discuss intimate topics with me.

We will ask you to fill in a questionnaire about your symptoms and the impact they are having on your life. If you are happy to proceed we will do a physical examination based on your symptoms.  We may need to assess your general posture, spine, hips and thorax followed by a muscle assessment to identify strengths and weaknesses.

If your condition requires an internal assessment (pelvic floor muscles via the vagina) we will explain in detail how an internal assessment is performed and continue with this, if you feel comfortable to do so.

An ultrasound scan of your abdominal muscles, pelvic floor and/or bladder is sometimes required at your first or second visit

Treatment Plan

As with many health conditions a holistic approach to treatment is the best approach, meaning your physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being should all be considered.

Every woman is an individual and the complexity of women’s health issues often requires a team of professionals working together.

Physiotherapy Plan

Following your first or second visit, we will establish a clear diagnosis. We will explain and educate you about your issue in a clear way, often using anatomical models, diagrams and pictures.

We will then begin with a physiotherapy treatment plan on average requiring 1-3 visits, dependent on the condition. Treatment may include manual therapy (hands-on), exercise prescription, advice on changes to your habits and guidance on lifestyle changes.

A Team Approach

  • Psychotherapy / psychologist / counselling
  • Nutrition
  • Stress reduction
  • Yoga, Pilates
  • Communication to GP
  • Gynecology referral
  • Urology referral

It is often necessary to team up with other professionals to completely solve your problem.

Based on our discussions together we will decide if psychotherapy would be helpful to deal with your emotional well-being, which is often a major factor in women’s health issues. Consider the fact – when we are in situations that are nerve wrecking, like waiting to go into an interview, we feel like we need to go for a wee repeatedly.

Sometimes we struggle to do a poo or wee in a public toilet because we can’t relax properly. Our brain controls our entire body and psychological stress and emotions cause physical reactions.

Meditation is the use of mindful breathing and focus to help calm the mind. Breathing properly is essential when trying to calm our nervous system and the breathing muscle (diaphragm) is a direct link to the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles.

Many people try meditation apps or see a specialist psychologist or therapist to learn how to mediate.

Yoga/Pilates classes and/or resistance training are an excellent way to keep working on your core strength, flexibility and posture, which will undeniably assist with improving your symptoms and maintaining your progress, in conjunction with physiotherapy treatment.

Your treatment pathway may require referral to a specialist doctor such as your own GP, a gynecologist, Urogynaecologist, Colorectal or urologist if necessary.
